A Birthday Gift for President Monson

The following was taken from the November issue of the Ensign: "In his conference talk, Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said: “When our beloved prophet, President Thomas S. Monson, was asked on his birthday this past August what would be the ideal gift that members worldwide could give him, he said without a moment’s hesitation, ‘Find someone who is having a hard time, … and do something for them.’”

Children, would you like to give President Monson a birthday present? Think of an act of service you could do for someone. Maybe your grandpa needs help around the house. Or perhaps that new boy at school needs a friend. There are many people who need help, and many kind children to help them! Tell us about your act of service, and then read about many others in the August 2009 Liahona and Friend—President Monson’s birthday month!" Deadline to send your letter/picture/permission is December 15.

Our Primary issued a challenge for each of the children in our ward to do this. Alyssa and I thought hard about something she could do for someone else. We decided to have her draw some pictures and then deliver them to our Great-Grandma as well as some of her neighbors in the assisted living center where she lives. She loves art and she especially loves giving it to other people.

Yesterday we delivered her drawings. We knocked on doors and when they answered she would hand it to them and tell them to have a good day. They seemed to appreciate it and offered kind words of thanks. It was a very small thing, but I think she learned something from it and the people appreciated it.
